UPDATE ADDED: Mon, 14/04/2025 - 11:58am by Karen Chisholm

Book lovers around the world are coming together from April 21-27 for the Global Book Crawl, and of course Australia’s local bookshops are in on the action! The Global Book Crawl is a worldwide celebration of local bookshops and those who love them. There’ll be seven different Aussie Book Crawls taking place, alongside crawls in Firenze, Nairobi, Kuala Lumpur, Malaga, Basel, Brooklyn NYC and many more (click HERE for the list).

Join the inaugural Aussie GLOBAL BOOK CRAWL, April 21 - 27 2025

Australians know all about a pub crawl, but how about a book crawl?

Your favourite local bookshops have joined a new international initiative, GLOBAL BOOK CRAWL, and you’re invited to take part in the fun!

* SYDNEY * NEWCASTLE * BLUE MOUNTAINS *
* MELBOURNE * NORTH-EAST VICTORIA *
* MORNINGTON PENINSULA * HOBART *

From 21 to 27 April 2025, Global Book Crawl (GBC) will bring together bookstores and book lovers around in the world, with a simple yet powerful idea: to unite local bookshops in a celebration of local literature, community and culture.

A Book Crawl is an adventure through the heart of a city or region’s local bookshops. Participants visit multiple shops, connecting with the local book culture and discovering hidden gems. Using your GBC (Global Book Crawl) Passport, collect a stamp at every bookshop you visit, and be in the running to win book prize packs or gift vouchers.

Participating bookstores strengthen community bonds with book lovers in their area and through collaboration with other local bookshops. Together, they create a united front that celebrates and supports authors, readers, and publishers: the whole local book culture.

Drop into your local bookshop to pick up your Global Book Crawl Passport from April 14, get the list of other bookshops in your area taking part, and start planning your route! You’ve got a week to collect stamps and enter the draw to win some fantastic book prizes. Use the hashtag #globalbookcrawl on social media to add your book crawl to the global story, sharing the magic of your local bookshops with a worldwide audience.

  • Explore the list of participating bookshops in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Newcastle, Blue Mountains, Mornington Peninsula, North-East Victoria

Mark Rubbo, Readings Chairman and Global Book Crawl Australian organiser, says, “From Blackheath to Mornington Australia's bookshops are community hubs and places of discovery. We are proud to be joining bookshops around the world to entice our communities to discover the vibrancy and diversity of our bookshops, from the much-loved Abbey’s in Sydney to the proudly small Paperback Bookshop in Melbourne, there's a bookshop for everyone on the Global Book Crawl.”
