As war looms on the horizon. the country suffers in a depression, and the temperance movement takes hold in New Zealand, Sergeant Frank Hardy and his wife Mette are struggling financially on their stud farm. To help, Frank takes on a compromised horse from a town near the front. When a body is found in a ditch and Mette vanishes, Frank begins a desperate search to find out what's going on.
